Brian J Heinz

Picture
Peabody Pond by Brian J. Heinz might be a perfect find for readers looking for an exciting middle-grade adventure novel. I loved the science-fiction elements of this story and the author's ability to add valuable life lessons to an excellent escapade. I also enjoyed the suspense built into the plot early on, and the unknown consequences of the chemical had me on the edge of my seat. Young readers will appreciate the short chapters that make the book flow smoothly and provide the perfect stopping points along the way.

Connor and Otis, honor students at Pendrake Middle School, stumble into trouble while fishing from their old skiff on Peabody Pond. They attempt to aid Dr. Lambert, a geneticist, who crashed his car on a forest trail while fleeing his pursuers. During the doctor’s violent abduction, a vial of an experimental hormone rolls down the hillside and shatters on the shore unleashing horrific changes in the simple aquatic life. Situations deteriorate as the boys struggle to stay one step ahead of the thugs while waging battle with the monstrous mutants of Peabody Pond. In their vow to solve the crime on their own, piling secrets upon lies, they enlist some unlikely allies and open the doors to a summer vacation fraught with mischief, mystery, mayhem, and death – and far more adventure than either boy could have dreamed.

I finally had the chance to read Peabody Pond. I enjoyed it; it was a real page turner!
I LOVE the spot on imagery / scientific observations throughout. You are exceptionally gifted at this type expression; in fact, you’re THE BEST. It’s no wonder you’ve achieved such success as a writer.  I was totally immersed in Connor and corny Otis’s experience, adventuring into the mystery and fantastic along with them. So vivid! I’ve read a LOT of Nancy Drew with my daughter, and your mystery is equally as compelling. Your chapter titles were great, poetic even – just like your narratives. I look forward to more of your creations. Also, great job in being real while addressing misconceptions about others, and how people sometimes unfairly judge and estimate others, vindicating those that were hurt in some way, and allowing ignorance to become informed.  I will be recommending your book to the middle schoolers, for sure. I’m so grateful my copy was signed by you. Look forward to seeing you this coming year!
