Just Breeze

Princess Breeze

Breeze covers by Aidana WillowRaven
Picture
Eighth grade starts out the same as every other year for Breeze Brannigan. She’s still the tallest student, boy or girl, in her class, wears shoes that would fit an elephant, and her smile reveals dazzling braces that blind everyone within ten feet.
Then she meets Cam, the new boy in school who speaks with an accent and must be from another planet, for none of the earthling boys she knows are so polite. He also has a secret, a secret that could mean life or death for Cam and his mother and that Breeze must help him keep.
While reading Beverly Stowe McClure's JUST BREEZE, I was immediately brought back to my days in middle school. Worried about her appearance, wanting to be just as pretty and successful as her siblings, convinced she will never have a boyfriend, Breeze's thoughts were so authentic to how a 13-year-old thinks. McClure does a fantastic job of making all of the characters in this book realistic. What I liked most about the story was the different relationships that Breeze had. Whether with her parents, her siblings, her best friend, or with the new mysterious boy in school, each of her relationships were unique and genuine. Not only was Breeze completely relatable, but you also start to wish you'd had a friend like her back when you were 13. She's awkward, respectful, sarcastic, and an amazing friend. This is a great story about friendship, family, love, and discovering yourself. Young teens will really enjoy this.

For months, Breeze Brannigan has heard nothing from Cam, the prince she met at school and who disappeared one night without telling her goodbye. The night she graduates from middle school, however, he contacts her and invites her to visit Isla del Fuego, his home. Who could refuse such an invitation?
Breeze, along with her whole family and best friends, Amy and Allison, soon sail to the island, where she and Cam renew their friendship. But, danger lurks; a legend comes to life, and Breeze finds herself in the middle of a battle that can have only one winner.
The author has seamlessly woven the subplots into the main plots, giving the story many layers. All the characters are well portrayed, making them memorable, real, and relatable. Then there is Seth Gatlin who will make readers wait for the next book to know whether Breeze will end up falling in love with him or will she be with Cam. It is a must-read for all middle schoolers who enjoy fantasy, action, adventure, and some light romance.

Wow, Beverly McClure surely gives a clear and definite answer to all of the questions out there about a real father vs. a biological father. When Myra finds out that Neil is not her biological father, she strikes out to find her real dad. This could be a good or not so good finding, especially because of the way her mom and Neil are acting.
This is an awesome book for anyone to read who has a father who is not their biological father. Neil was wonderful in how he handled the situation, leaving no doubt his love for Myra. And of course I would like to comment more on that, but it would be spoilers, so I will let you find out for yourself. Beverly McClure has written an awesome story here about adoption, a story that is so needed for children of any age. I strongly encourage you to buy a copy to read for yourself. This book is great even for someone who is not adopted because it helps one understand the feeling of the adopted person. This is a book well worth your time and money!

A Family for Leona

Picture

"The Orphan Trains.

In 1921 my mother rode in a train
from Brooklyn to Texas to her new home. During that time period, hundreds of orphans road on those trains to new lives.

A FAMILY FOR LEONA
is loosely based on my mother's life."
~ Beverly

cover by Aidana WillowRaven
Ten-year-old Leona doesn’t understand why her papa left his six children at the Brooklyn Home for Homeless Children after their mother’s death in 1921. Each day she prays he’ll return and take his children home. God, however, isn’t listening. Her brothers and sisters are either adopted or run away, leaving only Leona and Baby Mildred in the orphanage.
Leona promises she and Mildred will be together for always. A promise she cannot keep, for Leona, along with her friend Noah, who she defends from the bullies Hiram and Jehu, and several other orphans, are soon on a train headed to Texas, while her sister stays at the orphanage. Leona vows she’ll go back to Brooklyn, the first chance she gets.
A FAMILY FOR LEONA is a story of hope and restoration geared to children and young teens. The adventures and trials Leona and her best friend, Noah, endure pull us into their plight and we cheer and ache with them. Their experiences from a tenement dwelling in Brooklyn to farm life in Texas are quirky, enchanting and ultimately satisfying. Beverly Stowe McClure’s emotional fictional narrative is beautifully written through the eyes of a stubborn adolescent girl with a penchant for increasing her vocabulary. With themes like new beginnings, friendship, love and family, I recommend A Family for Leona and rate this book 5 stars.

Star of the Team

Picture
cover by Aidana WillowRaven
A girl.
A dream.
An accident.
A dream shattered.
Eleven-year-old Kate Taylor dreams of being the star of her basketball team, Angels. When Kate's tooth is knocked out at one of the games, and her mother, who is also her coach, says she can't play until the tooth the dentist replants heals, Kate's dreams are in jeopardy. Add Emily, the new girl at school who claims she's the best, and Kate faces a challenge to prove that she is the star.
Will Kate succeed? Or will Emily ruin Kate's plans?
STAR OF THE TEAM  by Beverly Stowe McClure is a wonderful children's book introducing young readers to the concepts of patience, teamwork, and friendship. Children often find themselves believing it is more important to be the best of the best when playing a sport, but at the age of the characters in the book - eleven - the most important issues in playing a sport are teamwork and learning the basics. The author does a great job portraying those concepts with creative character development and a heartfelt dialog throughout the book. The text is written as though it is coming straight from an 11-year-old's thoughts.
The pure innocence of a youthful mind is both humbling and humorous. The life lesson and message included in the story are powerful. Children and adults alike who play sports, coach, or have played in the past will enjoy this story, but those readers who have not would benefit and enjoy reading it as well.
